How to Successfully Declutter Your Home

Do you have more stuff than you know what to do with? Are your closets and drawers overflowing? If it is hard to find anything and you've finally decided that it is time to declutter your domain, you might feel overwhelmed just thinking about it. You're not alone. If you want to tackle the abundance in your abode, consider these tips.

Throw Out What You Don’t Need

Decluttering is all about getting rid of things that you don't need or use. Be honest with yourself about the things around your house that you actually use. Ask yourself: Do I really need more than one of these things? What is the reason for keeping broken or worn-out items? What is the worst thing that will happen if I get rid of this or that? If you can't remember the last time you used something, it's highly likely that you no longer need it. This is the heart and soul of successful decluttering: Get rid of the things that you no longer need or love. According to Living Order, getting organized in your home can help you have a clear mind, so don’t be afraid to throw out things you no longer use.

Moving Things Into Storage

One solution for paring down the clutter in your home is to move things into a storage locker. If you know you'll want an item at a later time but don't have the room or a use for it now, you can put it into long-term storage. On The Move advises that if you do this, you should avoid storing items in plastic bags, which can trap moisture and result in mold and mildew growth. Putting your possessions into a storage locker or space isn't really decluttering; it's just putting those items out of sight. Eventually, you'll have to deal with them. So, think long and hard before transferring your stuff from home to a storage unit without purging unwanted items when you declutter.

What Not to Do

Sometimes, the first thing people do when they're ready to declutter their space is to run out and buy a collection of cool-looking, decorative storage containers. The reality is that you should wait until you've finished decluttering before you invest in a supply of storage containers. That way, you'll know exactly how many, what type, and what size of containers you need to stow your newly organized stuff.

Remember to tackle decluttering in small sessions over several days or weeks. Your home didn't get cluttered in a day or even a week, and it will take longer than a day or a week to declutter it effectively.
